Flood Mitigation Assistance Grant Program English FY 2024 Notice of Funding Opportunity Competitive Selections Get Started Managing Your Grant The Flood Mitigation Assistance grant program is a competitive program that provides funding to state, territory and local governments and federally recognized Tribal Nations. Since the  National Flood Insurance Reform Act of 1994  was signed into law, funds are used for projects that reduce or eliminate the risk of repetitive flood damage to buildings insured by the  National Flood Insurance Program . FEMA chooses recipients based on the applicant’s ranking of the project, eligibility, and cost-effectiveness of the project. FEMA requires state, local, federally recognized tribal governments, and U.S. territories to develop and adopt  hazard mitigation plans  as a condition for receiving certain types of non-emergency disaster assistance, including funding for  hazard mitigation assistance  projects. On April 22, 2026, FEMA announced more than $35 million in Flood Mitigation Assistance awards, including Swift Current, to help states reduce their risk and prevent damage from flood disasters. Fiscal Year 2024 Flood Mitigation Assistance Amendment Notice of Funding Opportunity For fiscal year 2024, up to $600 million is available to states, local communities, Tribal Nations and territories to reduce or eliminate the risk of repetitive flood damage to buildings insured under the National Flood Insurance Program. The funding opportunity was originally published on Jan. 6, 2025. Then on April 30, 2026, FEMA published an amendment to the funding opportunity that incorporates recent federal guidance and aligns with overarching national goals. Funding comes from the National Flood Insurance Fund and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Applicants have until 3 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 6, 2026, to submit or revise and re-submit their application to FEMA. Applications received after this deadline will not be considered.
