Established by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) in 2004, pursuant to Assembly Bill 1002 (Wright, 2000), the Gas R&D Program is administered by the CEC’s Energy Research and Development Division. Each year, the CEC submits a proposed budget plan and funding request to the CPUC for review and approval. The Gas R&D Program invests about $24 million a year to support projects that: Improve gas system affordability. Inform long-term gas planning including strategic  gas system decommissioning. Reduce fossil gas consumption. Advance the beneficial production and use of renewable, low-carbon alternatives to fossil gas. Address gas sector emissions to deliver equity, public health, and environmental benefits. Stimulate California’s economic growth. Broader Participation Equals Greater Innovation The Energy Commission is committed to increasing diversity in the energy sector, and veteran, and LGBTQ business enterprises are encouraged to apply for funding opportunities.
