Gas Research and Development Program

Established by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) in 2004, pursuant to Assembly Bill 1002 (Wright, 2000), the Gas R&D Program is administered by the CEC’s Energy Research and Development Division. Each year, the CEC submits a proposed budget plan and funding request to the CPUC for review and approval. The Gas R&D Program invests about $24 million a year to support projects that: Improve gas system affordability. Inform long-term gas planning including strategic  gas system decommissioning. Reduce fossil gas consumption. Advance the beneficial production and use of renewable, low-carbon alternatives to fossil gas. Address gas sector emissions to deliver equity, public health, and environmental benefits. Stimulate California’s economic growth.
