About this opportunity

Larrieu is a one-story, asymmetrically-fenestrated building constructed of hand-adzed timbers and railroad ties. The cabin is in a deteriorated but sound condition representing the domestic side of mining history. Despite the need for an extensive clean-up and materials catalogue, the walls are exceptionally strong. Although architectural elements including doors and windows are heavily damaged or missing, enough of the original framed rafters, and flooring remain to conduct an authentic preservation effort. The cabin retains design and workmanship integrity in the simple constructions of mid 20th century domestic mining structures. It is built with noticeable effort in its constructions and workmanship that separate it from other mining cabins in the Mojave Preserve. The hand tooled railroad tie construction and raised wooden floors show a need for a permanent structure. Furthermore, it retains much of its original material form with all original unaltered materials. The structure retains aspects of feeling as an example of a mining cabin. Utilitarian in design, this vernacular building is important for its distinctive materials and workmanship, and for the tenacity and resiliency that its occupancy represents. Larrieu Cabin has been determined to be eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places at the local level with California State Office of Historic Preservation concurrence.
