About this opportunity

This is a Notice of Intent to award a Grant Agreement between the Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the University of Hawai'i (UH) to support a research project titled "Learning from traditional ecological knowledge to understand climate change impacts and preserve key cultural and natural resources in Ka'upulehu, Hawaiii." This Single Source Award is being made in accordance with Department of the Interior Policy 505 DM 2.14 B(4), which allows for award without competition to an applicant who is uniquely qualified to perform the activity based on technical expertise. The Principal Investigator for the project, Dr. Tamara Ticktin of the Botany Department of the University of Hawai'i at Manoa is uniquely qualified to perform the work on this project and is selected based several attributes. Dr. Ticktin has developed a specialized research capacity that integrates both the biological and social sciences, and is well-published on the application of traditional ecological knowledge on conservation practices. Key native Hawaiian residents of the focal land area on Hawai'i island (Ka'upulehu) helped to create the study plan and have agreed to participate in the project due to the involvement of Dr. Ticktin. Involvement of these residents is essential to the success of the project both in the identification of traditional ecological knowledge and of historical practices.
