About this opportunity

The purpose of the project under this cooperative agreement with CDC in Malawi (2017 – 2021) is to support the national blood transfusion service to reach its full national scope and mandate of ensuring adequate supplies of safe blood and blood products to meet the needs of all patients in all hospitals in Malawi. MBTS primarily will focus on developing quality and safe practices for blood transfusions throughout Malawi hospital blood banks (HBB) providing blood transfusions to patients. The specific activities include:• Expansion of MBTS blood supply operation to move from meeting 55% level in 2015 to meeting 95% of Malawi needs of safe Blood by 2021 through blood donor mobilization plan and retention of returning volunteer blood donors.• Infrastructure renovations required for quality HBB services.• Clinical training on safe and appropriate use of blood and blood products for clinicians and nurses.• Training of lab personnel on safe blood transfusion principles, blood screening, typing and cross-matching and quality assurance.• Improving the implementation of quality assurance (QA) program with the aim of attaining international accreditation.
